Scrappy Nine Patch Quilt On Point

Although this is a traditional quilt design the construction of the patchwork is quite complex with lots of different elements.  The 'nine patch' section is made up of tiny squares in a combination of Liberty prints and other fabrics; the finished size of each individual square measuring just 1" or 2.5 cms.  Each nine patch square has then been sashed with corner squares added and to complete the block half square triangles have been added.

The square quilt has three borders (two of which have been mitred):  the first in a bluey grey patterned print, a border with four patch squares set at an angle and a further border in a soft taupe printed fabric.  To add some further interest there is a flange or fillet between two of the borders in a dark rust solid fabric.  This matches the colour of the binding strip.

The back of the quilt has been pieced in a combination of the fabrics used for the borders on the front of the quilt.

The quilt measures approximately 64" x 64" or 163 cms x 163 cms.  I made the quilt using a domestic machine and finished the binding by hand.  Between the layers in 100% cotton wadding.  I used the 'stitch in the ditch' technique to quilt the patchwork and due to the variety of coloured prints, I used invisible thread for the top and cotton for the bobbin thread.  The effect of using the stitch in the ditch method is to give the patchwork an antique appearance.

The quilt is machine washable on a gentle setting.

Photographing the quilt proved to be quite challenging partly due to the size of the quilt (an extra pair of hands was necessary, which you might be able to see in some of the photos) and also the strong breeze.
